Where Can You Cash a Fidelity Check?
1. Banks & Credit Unions
Most U.S. banks and credit unions will cash a Fidelity-issued check, provided it is properly endorsed and valid.
If you are an existing customer with an account there, you can typically cash the check in-branch by presenting ID such as
- Driver’s license
- Passport
- State ID, etc., and endorsing it.
Even if you’re not a customer, some banks will cash it for a fee, but with a fee of $5–$10, if the check is drawn on or payable by that bank’s funds.
2. Fidelity Investor Centers (Branches)
Fidelity’s investor centers do not function like banks for the public.
They cannot give you cash; they can only accept deposits into Fidelity accounts.
So, you cannot walk into Fidelity and get cash for the check.
But you can deposit a check into a Fidelity account via an investor center by making it payable to Fidelity and telling them the account number, but they will not hand you cash.
3. Retailer Check-Cashing (Supermarkets, Big-Box)
Many grocery stores and big-box retailers such as
- Walmart
- Kroger
- Safeway, etc.
offer check-cashing services.
4. Check-Cashing Stores & Kiosks
Dedicated check-cashing stores such as Ace Cash Express, MoneyGram locations, etc will cash most types of checks, including Fidelity checks, for a fee.
They cater especially to non-bankers.
5. Third-Party Check-Cashing Apps & Services
Modern fintechs allow mobile cashing.
Apps like PayPal Cash a Check, Ingo Money, Cash App, etc., let you snap photos of your check and receive funds.
They accept checks payable to you.
6. ATM Deposit
If you have a bank account with ATM deposit, you can deposit the check at an ATM.
It won’t immediately give you cash, but it’s a quick way to access funds once cleared.

Fees, Limits & Check Holds
| Where / Situation | Fees & Limits | Hold / Availability | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your bank | Check-cashing fees are often waived for customers; limits vary. | Deposits may still be subject to a hold. | Deposit a $2,000 check into your checking account; there may be no cashing fee, but funds may not be immediately available. |
| Another bank | Non-customer fees commonly apply; limits vary by bank and check amount. | Cashing avoids a deposit hold, but ID and verification may be required. | A non-customer may pay a fee to cash a $1,000 check. |
| Retail stores | Fees vary. Walmart: up to $4 for eligible checks ≤$1,000 and $8 over $1,000. | Usually receive funds after the check is verified. | Cash an $800 check at Walmart → potentially $4 fee. |
| Credit unions | Members may receive free or low-cost check cashing. | Non-members may not be eligible. | A credit-union member cashes a check at their own credit union without a separate cashing fee. |
| Third-party checks | Acceptance and fees vary; some institutions refuse them. | Additional ID or presence of the original payee may be required. | Jane signs a $500 check over to John; John’s bank may require both parties to appear. |
| Standard deposit | Generally no separate check-cashing fee. | At least $275 of applicable deposits generally must be available by the next business day; remaining funds follow the applicable availability schedule. | Deposit a $1,000 check Monday → at least $275 generally available Tuesday, assuming no exception applies. |
| Large deposit | — | Deposits over $6,725 can qualify for a large-deposit exception and receive a longer hold. | Deposit a $10,000 check → the bank may hold the amount above $6,725 longer. |
| New account | — | Special rules can apply during the first 30 days of an account. | A newly opened account receiving a large check may have a longer hold. |
| Fidelity check | Fees depend on where it is deposited or cashed. | If deposited at another bank, that bank’s availability policy applies; Fidelity deposits can also have additional holds. | A $5,000 Fidelity check deposited at another bank may be subject to that bank’s normal hold policy. |
| State / tax rules | States may impose additional check-cashing requirements or fee restrictions. | Tax withholding on IRA distributions can vary by state. | An IRA distribution may have federal and/or state tax withholding, separate from any bank fee. |

Cashing a Fidelity 401(k) or IRA Check
When a retirement-plan distribution is paid directly to you, federal withholding and the 60-day rollover rules generally apply; a direct rollover to another eligible retirement account avoids mandatory federal withholding.
| Situation | Federal Withhold | What You Receive | Rollover Deadline | Key Action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 401(k) → IRA, direct rollover | 0% | Full amount goes to IRA | No 60-day action required by you | Best option for a rollover |
| 401(k) check payable to you | 20% mandatory* | 80% of gross | 60 days | Add the 20% from your own funds to roll over the full amount |
| Traditional IRA → IRA, direct transfer | 0% | Full amount transferred | No 60-day action required by you | Best option for a transfer |
| Traditional IRA distribution paid to you | 10% default† | Usually 90% of gross | 60 days if eligible for rollover | Deposit the rollover amount promptly |
| RMD payment | Withholding may apply | Depends on election | Cannot be rolled over | Treat as a taxable distribution |
| Amount not rolled over | Taxable | You keep the amount | N/A | May also face 10% early-distribution tax if applicable |
If 20% is withheld from an eligible 401(k) distribution, you must use other funds to replace the withheld amount if you want to roll over the full gross distribution; RMDs and certain other distributions are not eligible for rollover.
