Why Hasn’t Fidelity Sent My Tax Form Yet?

If you still haven’t received your tax forms, there are several factors that can delay them:

  • IRS Extension: By IRS rules, brokers must initially furnish 1099s by Feb 15. Fidelity routinely files an extension allowing 30 extra days. This means some forms legitimately arrive in early-to-mid March.
  • Waiting on Issuers: Most delays are due to third-party data. Mutual fund companies, corporations, or municipalities must report income to brokers before forms can be prepared. Fidelity can’t finalize forms until all investment issuers have sent the needed tax info.
  • Complex or Unusual Holdings: Certain assets require extra processing, and delayed forms usually show a “?” icon explaining which security’s info is pending.
  • Corrections Needed: If Fidelity finds an error after an initial form is printed, they will issue a corrected 1099. Corrected forms may arrive weeks after the originals.
  • Late K-1s: If you own private partnership or MLP interests, remember K-1s come from the partnership itself, not Fidelity. Many K-1s are notorious for arriving after April.
  • Timeframe: Typically, if a form is just delayed by a few weeks, it should surface by mid-March. Beyond that, contact support.
IMPORTANT
So, 30 days after February 15 around mid March is generally the norm. Longer delays may require follow-up.

Preliminary 1099s may appear before the final version, but they may not be suitable for filing.

What to Do If You Don’t Receive Your Fidelity Tax Form

If a tax form is missing or late:

  • Check Online First: Log in and confirm whether the form is Available or Pending. Make sure your contact info is correct in your profile. Also verify your e-Delivery settings.
  • Account Activity/Preliminary: For year-to-date transaction details, you can use Fidelity’s YTD Tax Activity or transaction history to estimate missing information.
  • Contact Fidelity: If the form is still not visible by its scheduled date, contact Fidelity support.
You can use Fidelity’s Secure Message or the live chat feature.
  • IRS Assistance: If by mid-March you truly have no form and can’t get one from Fidelity, contact the IRS at 800-829-1040. The IRS will attempt to get the missing form from the issuer.
  • Filing Your Return: If tax deadlines approach without receiving a needed 1099, you have options:
    • Estimate and File on Time: You may file your return by April 15 using your best estimates. If the missing form arrives later with different amounts, you would then file an amended return (Form 1040-X) to correct it.
    • File an Extension: Alternatively, file Form 4868 while waiting for final forms.
    • Form 4852: Specifically for missing W-2 or 1099-R, the IRS provides Form 4852. If you never got a 1099-R, you can fill out Form 4852 with estimated values, attach it to your 1040, and keep documentation of your effort to obtain the actual form.
