When Does Fidelity Update 401k Account Balances? Day & Time

Fidelity typically updates 401(k) balances after the market closes. Mutual fund prices are generally calculated after 4 p.m. ET and posted by about 6 p.m. ET, while total account balances may update overnight. Payroll contributions can take additional time to appear, depending on your employer’s plan.

Fidelity 401(k) balances can change at different times as contributions and investment activity are posted to the account.

The timing of those updates can affect when your latest balance appears in NetBenefits.

Your plan’s contribution and investment posting schedule can also determine when account activity is reflected.

How Often Does Fidelity Update 401(k) Balances?

Fidelity generally updates workplace 401(k) accounts once per business day using that day’s closing prices.

Because most 401(k) funds like mutual funds and index funds trade only at market close, the system performs a nightly batch process to refresh values.

Time What Happens to Your 401(k)
During Market Hours Your balance usually doesn’t change in real time.
4:00 PM ET The stock market closes and mutual funds calculate their daily value.
Evening Fidelity receives the updated fund prices and begins updating account values.
Overnight Fidelity processes the day’s changes.
Next morning You can usually see your updated 401(k) balance.
Weekends & holidays No new daily market update. The next update comes on the next business day.

So, you can expect your 401(k) balance to refresh once daily after close, reflecting the prior day’s gains or losses; intraday real-time updates do not apply to most 401(k) plans because the investments are valued at day’s end.

What Time Does Fidelity Update 401(k) Balances?

Time (ET) What to Expect
4:00 PM Market closes; mutual funds begin pricing
4–7 PM Most likely update window
7–10 PM Many 401(k) balances update during this period
After 10 PM Still possible; processing can take several hours
Next morning Delayed updates may appear by the next day

End-of-day processing:

Since 401(k) plans primarily hold funds priced once per day, updates occur after market close.

Mutual funds price at 4:00 PM ET, and Fidelity usually posts those values between early evening and early morning.

Time zones:

All official times are ET (New York time).

West Coast users may see updates correspondingly later in their local day (e.g. 6 PM ET is 3 PM PT).

Why Hasn’t My Fidelity 401(k) Balance Updated Yet?

If your 401(k) balance seems stale, common causes usually include:

  • Pending contributions: If you just had a payroll deduction, the funds may not yet be sent by your employer. Until the deposit arrives and is processed, your balance won’t reflect that contribution.
  • Trade timing: If you placed a trade during the day, it won’t execute until the end-of-day NAV.
  • Mutual fund NAV delay: Sometimes mutual fund pricing is delayed. Although NAVs are official around 5–6 PM ET, it can take longer.
  • Technical caching: Occasionally, the NetBenefits website may cache old data. If your browser or mobile app didn’t auto-refresh, click the Refresh link on the Balances page or pull down to refresh on the app to force an update.
  • Plan blackout or transition: If your employer recently switched recordkeepers or updated plan features, a temporary blackout period may pause updates.
  • Time zone cutoff: If you check your balance too soon after 4:00 PM, it might still be using the prior day’s NAV.

If delays persist, verify that your contributions were sent on time and ensure there are no pending transactions, and consider contacting Fidelity’s 401(k) support for help.

When Do 401(k) Contributions Show Up in Fidelity?

Your 401(k) contribution usually won’t appear in Fidelity the same day you get paid.

It depends on how quickly your employer sends the money and how the plan processes it. Here’s a quick breakdown of what to expect.

What You’re Waiting For When It Usually Shows Up What to Remember
Your 401(k) contribution Usually a few business days after payday Your employer must send it as soon as reasonably possible. For plans with fewer than 100 participants, 7 business days is the DOL safe harbor.
Employer match Could be each paycheck, quarterly, or annually Check your plan documents because the timing varies by plan.
Money showing in Fidelity May take a little longer after your employer sends it Fidelity has to process the contribution and allocate it to your account.
Still missing after ~1–2 weeks? Contact HR/payroll Ask when the contribution was sent and when it should appear in Fidelity.

Many employers submit contributions within 5–7 business days, but small plans can use a 7-business-day safe harbor.

So, don’t expect a 401(k) paycheck deposit the same day. Instead, allow up to 1–2 weeks after each pay date for deferrals to post, and possibly longer for any discretionary match or true-up.

If your contributions haven’t appeared after 15 business days post-pay, you may follow up with your employer or Fidelity.

When Do Investment Gains and Losses Show Up?

Your 401(k) balance reflects market gains or losses based on end-of-day prices:

Investment How Often It Changes When You’ll Usually See It
Mutual funds Once a day After the market closes, usually in the evening or overnight
Stocks & ETFs Throughout the day As prices change during market hours
Stable-value funds Less frequently According to the fund’s pricing schedule
New contributions When your money is invested After the contribution is processed and invested

If your 401(k) is invested in mutual funds, you generally won’t see the day’s gains or losses until after the market closes and the fund’s daily price is calculated.

Stocks and ETFs can change in value throughout the trading day.

Does Fidelity Update 401(k) Balances on Weekends?

When the market is closed on weekends or holidays, your account values do not change.

Note

Fidelity does not update investment values over the weekend because the markets are closed. As a result, your Friday closing balance generally remains the same on Saturday and Sunday.

No new NAVs are calculated until the next trading day. On a holiday Monday, you’ll still see Friday’s prices until the market reopens.

That said, on the next business day you might notice your balance is different than Friday’s close.

This usually means:

  • A mutual fund NAV or other end-of-week update was posted after Friday’s report, becoming live when the system next refreshed.
  • A pending transaction finally settled.
